My Work
I have presented below some examples of work I have done from conception to completion.
challenge
After loosing a crucial location only one day before it needed to be shot, it was up to me to figure out a way to make the above dining room work as one of our most important sets. The director was having a difficult time picturing the space fitting in to his vision for the story.
execution
The director felt the above sketch worked best for our story, but had doubts that such a feat could be pulled off in such a short period of time. With a small favor from a local vendor and two custom bookshelves, this set was complete in less than 24 hours and for less than $200. Everything pictured was brought in or made from scratch.
result
Our director was ecstatic, and rejoiced that the set actually wound up better after all the distress. This example of adaptability and perseverance represent two of my strongest personal and professional characteristics. The collaborative process constantly evolves, offering new challenges at every stroke. My ability to adapt and solve problems, instead of creating more obstacles is what I bring to the table.
conception
An advertising firm had come up with a very cool idea, and now it was time to make that a reality. They explained that they wanted to create practical props of some of their clients cinema technologies that had been made into exploded views. I came up with these crude sketches after a couple of google searches on how the stuff actually worked and what was inside.
design
We went through numerous renderings, and finally landed on precisely what the agency and client were looking for. About a week later we had sourced the materials we needed and completed construction of these props on time and within budget.
product
The result was actually quite stunning. The client and agency were both pleased to the point that the agency requested the props be set up in their offices.
conception
With the image above I was asked by an advertiser to create a similar dj booth, but with a Tron like flare. With time constraints in mind I was able to rough sketch three versions in my pocket notebook within about an hour. They choose the one pictured above right.
design
I did a rendering to ensure that the scale and overall concept was communicated before sourcing materials and begining construction .
result
The finished product was well received and worked well with the costumes that were used 'not pictured' as well as the lighting.
challenge
This movie only had the budget to shoot one of our sets in a location that was in terrible disrepair, in part due to recent flooding. It was worth it because the exteriors of the location were some of the most beautiful and unique landscape that could be found. The set was to be a voodoo shack and the challenge was there was little money and the house was in such a state.
design
My team and I filled the space with many layers of visual texture that took on the monochromatic look that was desired. The elements of collected dressing and practical lighting gave a rich and mysterious look to the space. We used carpet that I had left over from a previous project as a wall covering, and also built a wall to close off the kitchen and make the space feel less domestic.
result
The set was one of the most stylistic moments in the film, and became as if a character, with its own presence in the story. It was visually striking, and helped to set a mood for the events of the plot to build from.
challenge
Our Director really loved this location for our story and how its geography tied in well with our other sets. He also liked the chaotic nature of the place visually. The challenge was that it was an outdoor bar that needed to be sold to the viewer as a private strip club. In addition the budget nor location allowed for any substantial construction.
design
I was able to come up with a concept using materials I already owned that not only solved all the problems that we faced, but also did so in a beautiful and visually engaging way. I owned these light curtains and the fabric that is seen being installed above. The cinematographer had chosen to shoot with anamorphic lenses, and I imagined that these lights would become a fantastic background for our scene to unfold.
result
The lights stages and poles we installed turned this outdoor patio bar into a unique and interesting strip club space. The lighting paired with the textures and visual noise made for a feast for the eyes.
